Geomorphic Processes
The way that reefs form are directly influenced from the ground(seabed). There are three main ways that reefs form. Firstly there is fringing reefs, which form directly along the coast. When a fringing reef continues to grow out and the parts connecting to the mainland dies, the remaining reef is called a barrier reef. An atoll is a circular reef that surrounds a central lagoon. They form when a volcanic island sinks and becomes submerged.
