Coral reefs are underwater structures formed by the build up of calcium carbonate (limestone) secreted by colonies of coral polyps. They are home to 25% of all marine life, including fish, mollusks, crustaceans, octopi etc.
Most coral reefs are within the Tropics due to the warm water. They also require shallow and clear water. The majority of coral reefs are around the Philippines and Northern Australia, as there is warm and shallow water
The Great Barrier Reef is located on north-eastern coast of Queensland and has a length of over 2 300 kilometres covering an area of around 34 440 square kilometres. It is home to large populations of dugong, more than 1 500 species of fish, 17 species of sea snake, 6 species of sea turtles and 15 species of seagrass
