Threats
There are many different threats to the Great Barrier Reef. Firstly, there is the crown of thorns starfish which can eat up to over 450 square centimetres of coral per day. Large numbers of the crown of thorns starfish can be heavy blamed on the overfishing of predators.
Cyclones are also another threat as they fragment the reef, cause sediment plumes and the heavy rains following decrease salinity.
Unsustainable overfishing can damage the food chain, allow excess algal growth and remove the predators of the pest fish.
Pollution from mining and industry can also damage the reef as the pollution can kill the animals living on the reef.
